You bothered me. You will Pay!!
Dr. John Briffa* on 03/30/2011
My eye was caught by the report of a study presented this week at the American Heart Association meeting in Atlanta in the US. In short, what this research found is that sleep deprivation led to increased eating (in the order of about 300 calories a day). This is not the first study to link shortened sleep duration with enhanced food consumption. Previous work has shown that sleep deprivation may: (more…)

Enlist Your Hormones in the Battle for Weight Loss

You'll Never Worry About Weight Again, heh, heh!
When you’re young you can eat like crazy and stay slim. Your muscles are firm and your body agile… regardless of what you eat. But that changes with age. After you hit middle age it’s a battle to stay in shape… and one that gets tougher each year.
We tend to accept this fact and put it down to getting old. But that doesn’t explain what causes this mysterious change. Why do we start to store more fat and build less muscle? (more…)

Some foods just go together—peanut butter and jelly, cheese and crackers, peas and carrots. But some foods that taste great together are also more nutritious when eaten in combination. Here are three powerful pairs that are better together:
Power-Food Pairing: Whole Grains with Garlic or Onions
Adding sautéed onions or garlic to whole-grain dishes takes them beyond ordinary—and new research suggests it can make whole grains healthier too. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, found that combining garlic and/or onions with whole grains may help boost the absorption of iron and zinc—minerals that are absorbed less easily from plant sources than animal sources. (Iron helps shuttle oxygen to cells; zinc is needed for healthy immunity and repairing wounds.) Researchers don’t know exactly how, but speculate that sulfur compounds in onions and garlic are what help to promote absorption. (They’re also what cause garlic breath.) (more…)

Dear David,

Am I Right For Your Type??
You can look much younger than you are.
It’s just a matter of getting your hormones under control.
Our hormones regulate everything from our sex drive to our metabolism and stress levels. As you get older they start to decline and go out of balance.
This happens because of the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we use. And, when your hormones are out of balance, it can play havoc with our overall health.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. (more…)

Our Fitness Standard....
In today’s world it’s harder than ever to keep your weight under control, as evidenced by the fact that over 2/3 of all American adults are now overweight or obese.
In fact, an alarming bit of information came to my attention in 2009, when CDC statistics revealed that in the U.S. the number of obese people actually outnumber the amount of merely overweight people. And in 2011, one in three children are now overweight or obese; nearly triple the rate from 1963.
The plain, unvarnished truth is the US has predominantly become a nation of fat and obese citizens. (more…)

Did you know that even the lowest-priced supermarket is brimming with complete rip-offs? From health foods that aren’t healthy to gourmet foods that aren’t gourmet, every store is chock-full of items that can be a big wallop to your pocketbook, unless you know the secrets to shopping wisely.
A sample rip-off list comes with a couple surprises – for example, did you know that gluten-free bread may not be the bargain you expect or that cereal packages with cartoons on the front are red lights for rip-offs? (more…)

What you eat can affect your health and your longevity. Find out which foods experts say we should enjoy for a long life — and which ones to avoid.
Why are some people “old” at age 70 while others are “young” at 90? Experts have different theories about why we age, but they agree we can influence the process. Longevity isn’t just about delaying death — it’s about enjoying more years of health and vitality. Diet is one of the lifestyle choices we can make to slow down the aging process and delay the onset of age-related chronic illnesses. (more…)

Dear David,

..He Used To Be A Chihuahua...
Does it occur to you that they’re doing the same thing in Tokyo that they did in Three Mile Island?
Back in 1979 – exactly 32 years ago yesterday – they were telling everybody for the first couple of weeks not to worry. Then they told everyone to stay inside. Then they evacuated. And then they finally told everyone the truth – that it was a dangerous radiation leak. (more…)

When selecting a pomegranate, consider that the heavier the fruit is, the juicier it will be.
1. They keep your teeth clean.
Rich in polyphenolic flavonoids—compounds with antibacterial properties—pomegranate juice has been found to be just as effective as prescription mouthwash at ridding the mouth of plaque, the bacteria that causes cavities and gingivitis.
2. They regulate cholesterol.
Pomegranates contain paraoxonase—a naturally occurring enzyme in the body that helps keep LDL (bad cholesterol) from accumulating in arteries. In one study, subjects who drank pomegranate juice for two weeks had an 18% increase in production of the enzyme. (more…)

I THOUGHT So!
Alice Marson, BS, MS
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) hospital-acquired infections cost an estimated $20 billion a year, and a lot of human suffering, not to mention death.
This threat is causing needless deaths of some 90,000 hospital patients each year and could be prevented if hospitals would address unsanitary facilities, germ-laden instruments and unwashed hands. Deaths linked to hospital germs kill more people each year than car accidents, fires and drowning combined, and represents the fourth leading cause of death among Americans, behind heart disease, cancer and strokes, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. Dear David,

You're A Little Short on Quercetin...!
Your immune system is made up of over a trillion “fighter” cells designed to seek and destroy disease before it can harm you.
And if you lived in native times, your “fighter” cells would provide you with more than enough protection.
But today our modern environment isn’t letting your immune system do its job.
Everything from the nutritionally void foods in our grocery stores to free radicals in cosmetic products, and toxic pollutants in the air weaken our immune cells. And this makes it much more likely for us to get sick.
I’m going to show you a simple 2-step solution to my patients to fortify your immune system and keep it in tip-top shape. And you can use it, too.
Here’s what you do… (more…)

Your Pet’s Food Needs to Be Healthy Too

KEEP MOVING!! Mom's Cooking -- FASTER!!
By Alice Marson*
Pet owners must realize just how important nutrition is to the health of their pets and are beginning to pay more attention to what they are feeding their cats and dogs. To keep your pet healthy, extend your pet’s life and save on vet bills, it’s just as important for your pet to eat healthy as it is for you. A perceptive owner is aware that a healthy pet has clear bright eyes, brilliant coat sheen, clean teeth, good breath, and a playful happy attitude. Unfortunately, many pets are unhealthy attributed to their diet, and suffer from health problems, such as, allergies, diabetes, cancer, ear infections, irritable bowel, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, scratching, skin and coat issues. The recent earthquake in Japan dealt a shock to the entire world. As the events of this tragedy continue to unfold, I’m immensely saddened by the scenes of loss and moved by the heroism of the nuclear plant workers who press on despite grave risks to their personal health. My heart and prayers are with the Japanese people at this time of unimaginable crisis.
If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably heard about iodine tablets and potassium iodide as a means of mitigating the effects of radiation. Even as far away as the U.S., some are concerned about potential radiation and wondering if they should take iodine tablets, or at least stock up on them. (more…)

Plastic containers and linings often leach chemicals into the surrounding environment. And some of those chemicals, like the endocrine-disrupting bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates, may be harmful to your health.
Manufacturers have even begun advertising some products as “BPA-free.” But a recent study found that most plastic products leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals even if they’re labeled “BPA-free!”
The scientists found that 70 percent of common plastic products tested positive for estrogenic activity, and that number rose to 95 percent when the products were subject to real-world conditions such as dishwashing or microwaving.
Time Magazine reports:
“BPA is particularly worrisome simply because it is so common. Nearly every American has some amount of BPA in his or her body, in part because plastics are so ubiquitous.”
