From the Desk of Brother Sabre of Otherworldly Compassion–a.k.a., Reverend David….

Looking for The Great Dog Biscuit….

(The following is the first communique from a group calling itself Unitarian Jihad. It was sent to me at The Chronicle via an anonymous spam remailer. I have no idea whether other news organizations have received this communique, and, if so, why they have not chosen to print it. Perhaps they fear starting a panic. I feel strongly that the truth, no matter how alarming, trivial or disgusting, must always be told. I am pleased to report that the words below are at least not disgusting.) (more…)

If your cat was peeing on your bed, I’m the guy who would come to your house and help him stop. I’m what you would call a cat behaviorist or a cat expert, and yes, I do this for a living.

I didn’t choose this path or grow up thinking, “I want to be a cat behaviorist.” It chose me.
On my show, My Cat from Hell, I help people find ways to strengthen their relationships with their cats, and many of the methods I use and teach are ones that I developed while working in the trenches at an animal shelter.

Since I began working with cats, I’ve met tens of thousands of felines, in shelters and in homes. But the one cat who taught me the most was Benny. Benny was what I like to call the original cat from hell–seven pounds of feline frustration who I loved with all my heart. My book, CAT DADDY: What the World’s Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love and Coming Clean, centers on my relationship with Benny–the one who taught me the most.

I don’t play favorites. My house was always full of critters, but Benny demanded more than the others in every way. He was challenged physically and challenging behaviorally. He put me through my CAT DADDY paces for almost fourteen years and kept me humble.

At the same time, Benny was witness to and participant in the most chaotic period of my life. Without him and without the critical lessons he and many of the other special animals in my life have taught me over the years, I may not have survived–and I certainly wouldn’t have made it as far as I have.

These are the some of the key things I learned from my journey with Benny: (more…)

20 Painkillers in Your Kitchen

Make muscle pain a memory with ginger

When Danish researchers asked achy people to jazz up their diets with ginger, it eased muscle and joint pain, swelling and stiffness for up to 63 percent of them within two months. Experts credit ginger’s potent compounds called gingerols, which prevent the production of pain-triggering hormones. The study-recommended dose: Add at least 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of chopped ginger to meals daily.

Cure a toothache with cloves

Got a toothache and can’t get to the dentist? Gently chewing on a clove can ease tooth pain and gum inflammation for two hours straight, say UCLA researchers. Experts point to a natural compound in cloves called eugenol, a powerful, natural anesthetic. Bonus: Sprinkling a ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves on meals daily may also protect your ticker. Scientists say this simple action helps stabilize blood sugar, plus dampen production of artery-clogging cholesterol in as little as three weeks.

This Can Get DEEP!

The Rev

How Many of us have been “Dumbed Down”, in a propagandistic conspiracy of uniformity, of acquiescence, of acceptance  of the deterioration of our society, culture and individual happiness?

How many times have we been warned to accept things as they are, because they will never get any better? How many times do we accept the lies of those who race “to the bottom”, by indoctrinating us into the material and fiscal traps that enslave us to this planet? that deny us our right to independent thought. aspiration, and immortality? Who the hell are these folks, who aspire to rule over all material things in this world, while denying us our yearning to know, to learn, to grow, and to ascend?

Every message to which we have been exposed, is either a lie, a diversion using half-truths, or a loud, obnoxious, boisterous drumming put out by those who wish to control, steal, enslave, and deny. These entities are greedy, small-minded, and short-sighted (in my opinion; you may have other words for them.).

They co-opt our educational systems, rape our fiscal houses, and destroy our personal and communal security. Yet, here in the U.S., we are gullible enough to put these entities into positions of authority. What’s Wrong With This Picture?

What’s wrong is, we as a people, as a nation, as a society, have forgotten ( or dismissed!) our capacity to question that authority. (I said,”Question”; not rebel against!) If we cannot question, think for ourselves, reason by our own capacity, then we are getting what we deserve. Any who say they are not open to learning, to changing, to growing, and who are willing to settle for “whatever comes my way”, have automatically enslaved themselves to this system. Guns are irrelevant, in this case. I have trumpeted for years; “Violence Is The Last Refuge Of The Incompetent”! By that I refer to not only force of arms, but also Hate, Fear-Mongering, Divisiveness,Suppression, and Exclusion.

“Well, I am only one person; it’s useless to fight The System, because it will crush me like a grape!” This is the way of thinking that the system applauds. As an example, please consider the “Occupy” Movements throughout the world, at this writing. These are common folk who, like Brutus above, are fed up with being walked-upon. The movements are non-violent, and the common goal (whatever the issue) is to publicise issues that the Corporate Media will not bring to light. To my mind, the Corporate Media are part of the Problem, not part of the Solution.

“So what can I do/be/have, so as to change my world for the better? It seems so insurmountable!”  This is a common question as well as a complaint, or even a surrender to Hopelessness. I have some suggestions. These are not to be cast in stone, as every person has her/his own method (based on ability, or capability) of helping an individual microcosm — their own: (more…)

Update On Earth Day, 2012

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Good Morning, Loyal Readers;

It has been an interesting 2 weeks. Many changes have occurred and we have converted our Staff, in a manner of Speaking. ROLF, our Ace Animal Researcher, transitioned about 10 days ago. He did not suffer from and injury or malady; he said it was his time. So we held a small dinner with him, along with a Farewell Ceremony. Afterward, All of Us — Janice, Sam, Scooter, Kermit and of course Hercules, told stories, jokes, and gave Rolf as much caring and Love as we could muster. It was hard to hold back the tears, and the thoughts of missing him.

The Rev took it especially hard, but He was the most stoic about it (he is a Near-Death Survivor, you know).  Since He knew what Rolf was in for, His tears turned to tears of Joy, a little Envy (at not being able to accompany him!),  and — well, suffice it to say, He turned the page.

Rolf, in this Dimension, was responsible for almost all of the wonderful Pictures and Captions that you have enjoyed over the years. He trained Scooter (our Intern) and will leave some mighty big shoes to fill, as it were! Scooter, on the other hand, has been gathering some new photos and pictures. we hope you will enjoy them in the future, as much as you have enjoyed Rolf’s work in the past.

Rolf did not transition alone; he lay down, with the entire Staff and well-wishers around him. No drugs, no food, no assistance was needed. He just closed his big brown eyes, and, in the candle-lit Departure Room, stopped breathing. We stayed for more than 2 hours, in Meditation, (Prayers, if you will), Silent encouragement, and some of the most intense emotions we ever generated.

We built a Funeral Pyre, and recycled his physical suit back into the world; ashes were buried beneath his favourite oak tree.

The following day, as if to say he had made it, Rolf must have sent us this photo:

A Healthy Lifetime of Intimacy

                                        (800) 488-1500 www.whitakerwellness.com No doubt about it, sexual desire and function slow down as we get older. What doesn’t change, however, is our lifelong need for intimacy. For many people, that includes satisfying sexual relations. It’s important for men and women to understand the challenges they and their partners face during this time of transition—and to be aware of therapies that enhance libido and performance in both sexes.

Good Health = Good Sex
You can’t expect to have topnotch sexual function if you have poor overall health. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and other disorders involving impaired circulation are commonly linked with sexual dysfunction. That’s because optimal blood flow is required to produce erections in men and clitoral engorgement in women. Other conditions that can affect interest in sex and the ability to act on that interest include anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, and neurological problems. Once these health issues are tackled, desire and function often return. (more…)

Best asparagus recipes and why you shouldn’t snap the ends off

...So Where's My Asparagus?

I once co-hosted a baby shower on my sister’s farm in Niagara, Ontario. At the very last moment, the mom-to-be was unable to attend. With a backyard full of women with nothing to do, my sister asked if anyone wanted to see the asparagus garden. The group of us, ranging in age from six to 85 years old, trekked half a kilometre into their property.

When we came upon the garden, it was like nothing I had ever seen: a 300-square-foot patch covered in asparagus spears. They shot up randomly with each spear unique in shape and size. We rolled up our pants and armed with sharp knives and wicker baskets, harvested enough for everyone to go home with a suppers-worth.

And so, ever since then, fresh local asparagus has always felt like nature’s spring gift. Marking the change of season, it is the first vegetable to pop up after a long, cold winter. It is loaded with nutrients, minerals and antioxidants to literally put spring in our step. Here are some tips for selecting, storing and prepping your asparagus – as well as some recipes from the Chatelaine Kitchen to help you enjoy this spring treasure. (more…)

The 7 Worst “Healthy Food” Imposters…

Everywhere you turn, someone is telling you that this is good for you or that will improve your health.  We have orange juice that supposedly lowers cholesterol, flavored waters that boost immune health, and even cookies that help you lose weight!

While most of us are already skeptical of these types of claims, there are foods out there that fly under the radar.  They masquerade as healthy, simply lying in wait in to sabotage your health.

Here are seven of the worst healthy food imposters: (more…)

Dry Brushing Offers Powerful Detoxification

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

The skin is the body’s largest organ of elimination.  Your skin is able to eliminate as much as one-fourth of the total toxins that your body filters out–up to 2 pounds of waste each day!  But in order for your skin to do its job, it needs to be kept healthy and uncongested.  That’s why health experts recommend a very simple technique called dry brushing.  It involves the use of a soft natural bristle brush to gently remove dead skin cells.

Dr. Gloria Gilbère, a renowned natural health practitioner, explains the value of dry brushing this way:  “[With] today’s sedentary life-style, general lack of exercise, and use of antiperspirants … toxins and metabolic waste products become trapped in the body instead of being released with sweat.”  Dry brushing stimulates the sweat glands and exfoliates the skin.

     Benefits of Dry Brushing:

  • Faster elimination of toxins
  • Improved blood flow and circulation
  • Reduced cellulite
  • Accelerated lymphatic flow
  • Exfoliation of the skin
  • Cell regeneration
  • Stimulates sebaceous glands
  • Boosts immune system
  • Opens pores and cleanses skin

Ever wonder why that block of cheddar is bright orange?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

ChatelaineBy Katherine Engqvist | Chatelaine – Mon, 26 Mar, 2012

Ever wonder why that block of cheddar is bright orange?

Here’s a little food for thought today. . .

Have you ever wondered why cheddar cheese in North America is orange but in Europe and other places around the world it’s a whitish colour?

That’s because in North America some cheese is dyed to make it look more appealing. Cheese isn’t the only thing artificial dyes are added to and often these additives found in Canada and the United States are banned in other countries around the world.

Take tartrazine or more commonly known as Yellow No. 5. It’s banned in Norway and Austria but in North America it is often found in foods marketed towards children such as candy, ice cream, and soft drinks. But it’s not just found in food, tartrazine is also found in prescription drugs and cosmetics.

So why all the fuss?

A study published in The Lancet, a leading medical journal, found that artificial colours and/or a sodium benzoate preservative cause hyperactivity in children. As reported by CBC, it also contains more salt than the body can take as well as being linked to asthma, skin rashes and migraines.

Tartrazine isn’t the only additive that’s banned in other countries but can still be found in Canada. Colours like Allura Red (banned in Denmark, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria and Norway) and Sunset Yellow (banned in Norway and Finland) are among a list of additives that can be found in the Canadian food system (as reported by the CBC).

Detox your organs for a complete body cleanse

Detox your organs for a complete body cleanse

Is a detox really necessary? In short, yes. The large number of pollutants we encounter every day complicate the body’s detoxification efforts, which in turn leave the body more vulnerable to illnesses and disease, not to mention hormonal imbalances.

Regardless of their source, all toxins must be processed through the body via the detoxification pathways in our liver, which is why it gets the bulk of our attention during any detox program. By supporting your other organs as well, however, you will improve the results of your detox and in turn reap the benefits of better health, glowing skin, better digestion, and increased energy. Drop 50% More Body Fat with Whole Grains

Whole wheat helps you melt body fat.Whole wheat helps you melt body fat.

If you could make a simple change in your diet to drop more pounds and body fat, would you? A new study finds switching from refined-wheat foods (like white bread or pasta) to whole-grain versions can boost your weight loss by 35% and help you melt nearly 50% more body fat.

In a recent study reported in the Journal of Nutrition, 79 overweight or obese postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to eat a diet containing refined or whole-grain wheat products. After 12 weeks, both groups lost weight — 7.9 pounds for the whole wheat group vs.5.9 for the refined. The whole-wheat group also shed 3% body fat compared with 2.1% for the refined-wheat eaters.
