Mammography screening had no effect on breast cancer mortality in six European countries with national screening programs, according to a study published in BMJ, the New York Times reports (Bakalar, New York Times, 8/1). Breast cancer mortality rates declined by as much as 29% between 1989 and 2006 in the countries analyzed. However, the decline did not differ significantly between paired regions with similar population characteristics — Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland; the Netherlands and Belgium; and Sweden and Norway — even though some of the countries started screening programs 10 to 15 years earlier than others.
Researchers examined World Health Organization data for the six countries (Bankhead, MedPage Today, 7/29).The findings indicated that in all regions, earlier implementation of screenings had no effect on mortality. For example, in Northern Ireland, screening was introduced in the early 1990s, and about 75% of women were receiving mammograms by 1995. In the Republic of Ireland, screening was introduced in 2000, and in 2008 about 76% of the population was screened. Despite the difference in implementation, from 1989 to 2006, breast cancer mortality rates decreased by 29.6% in Northern Ireland and by 26.7% in the Republic of Ireland (New York Times, 8/1).
“The contrast between the time differences in implementation of mammography screening and the similarity in reductions in mortality between the country pairs suggest[s] that screening did not play a direct part in the reductions in breast cancer mortality,” the researchers wrote.
The study also showed that breast cancer mortality had been declining since the early 1970s and did not change significantly after screening was introduced. Further, the greatest reduction in mortality occurred among women in their 40s, who were not included in most countries’ screening programs (MedPage Today, 7/29).

An open letter from organic dairy farmers in Hawaii explains how to reduce radiation in milk and vegetables. The letter explains that boron can be used to capture radioactivity.
The letter states that boron is the only mineral capable of accepting and ionizing radiation that never changes the nucleus of living cells. The Hawaii farmers have begun feeding their cows and goats sodium borate at milking times, as well as adding it to kelp and water troughs.

Not long ago, researchers at the world-renowned University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center published a groundbreaking scientific review of their favorite anti-cancer nutrient — curcumin. Curcumin, along with several other nutrients, is remarkable in that it can actually tell the difference between a healthy cell and a cancer cell.
