The Top 5 Osteoporosis Lies
Inspiration by Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

Words can – and do – make a big difference. Perhaps the use of the word “lies” in today’s blog post title may sound a bit harsh to you. In fact, at first I wrote “myths” instead, but I soon realized that it didn’t apply.

As defined by the online dictionary, a myth is “an unfounded or false notion.” A lie is “something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.” Notice the subtle difference between the two. Myths are not created with a specific purpose; they simply spring up and innocently continue into the future. And myths typically develop over a long period of time, passed on from generation to generation. On the other hand, lies have a purpose, they are invented to fulfill an agenda. As the definition states, lies are “meant to deceive.”

Once you’ll read what’s coming up next, I’m pretty sure you’ll agree with me: it is perfectly warranted to use the word “lies” instead of “myths”.

Let’s take a look now at the top five osteoporosis lies. (more…)

America has a drinking problem. No, not booze. I’m talking about soft drinks. According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, the average American guzzles 44.7 gallons of the sweet stuff every year. Not sure what 44.7 gallons looks like? It’s about what you’d need to fill a small kiddie pool.

But the truth is, you don’t need me to tell you that soda isn’t healthy. We all know that America’s drink of choice contributes to our country’s ever-expanding obesity problem. But, as Rodale.com writer Leah Zerbe discovered, love handles are just the beginning. Read on for her report on three shocking soda facts that will have you saying “Just water, please” from now on.

Anti-inflammatory foods may help you reduce inflammation. The symptoms of inflammation include swelling, redness and pain.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet
An anti-inflammatory diet focuses on foods that help your body create the right kind of prostaglandins, or hormones that help the body regulate inflammation. In part, you want to eat foods that have the right types of fat so that your body will make anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and avoid the foods that have fat that leads to the production of inflammatory prostaglandins.

Good Anti-Inflammatory Foods
You will want to eat foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, an acid that is important to your health that your body is incapable of manufacturing. Not only can foods that have omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, these foods may help reduce the risks of developing heart disease, osteoporosis and high blood pressure. Foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids include:

  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Albacore tuna
  • Walnuts
  • Brazil nuts
  • Almonds

Wild fish tends to have more omega-3 fatty acids than do farm raised fish.

In addition, look for foods that have high levels of vitamins A, C and E. There are many foods that are good sources of these vitamins, including:

  • Garbanzo beans
  • Brown rice
  • Lentils
  • Broccoli
  • Cantaloupe
  • Tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries

Where would foods be without spices? Anti-inflammatory spices can add “zing” to your meals. Experiment with spices including:

  • Cinnamon
  • Rosemary
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Cloves
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric
  • Parsley
  • Oregano

If you use oils, focus on extra virgin olive oil.

Try to avoid eating processed foods as much as possible as processed foods contain polyunsaturated and partly hydrogenated fats, a big no-no as far as inflammation and your health overall.

An anti-inflammatory diet is basically a healthy, low fat diet. Not only might you feel fewer aches and pains if you include more of these foods in your meals, you may also lose weight

The Germiest Places

Eighty percent of infections are spread through hand contact. After you touch a germ-infected object you have the germ

on your hand, and then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth, and you then acquire the germ.

The germiest places in America are not where you might think. They are not restricted to public restrooms, toilet seats, and grungy bus seats—-many are right in your own home.

The following are only 10 of the germiest things:

ATM buttons-Chinese researchers found that each ATM key they tested contained an average of 1200 germs.

Ladies’ purses-your purse goes everywhere with you and gets plunked down on the floor, on countertops and on countless other surfaces. Dr. Charles Gerba, PhD, a professor of environmental microbiology at University of Arizona and his team found that most purses had tens of thousands of bacteria on the bottom. Some had millions. Merry Christmas! -- Herc

Talk about an image makeover:  First prunes got a new name (they’re dried plums, if you please), and now it seems they offer a previously unrecognized benefit:  They’re good for your bones.  In fact, says nutrition researcher Bahram H. Arjmandi, RD, at Florida State University, midlife women who ate ten prunes daily for a year slowed their bone loss substantially.  If ten sounds daunting, even three a day can make a difference, says Arjmandi, who adds that prunes are the most bone-friendly fruit he’s seen in decades of study.  Since women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the seven years after menopause, that’s good news.

It’s especially welcome because hopes for a different natural fix were recently dashed.  Soy supplements did nothing for bones in menopausal women who took a hefty dose for two years.  (The supplements didn’t cool hot flashes either.)  So eat tofu if you like it, but for your bones’ sake, start snacking on prunes.  Unless the thought makes you feel old.  In that case, have some dried plums.

Dear David,

Today I want to show you an important way to improve your health and protect you against a problem we’ve created in the modern world.

When we cook our food, it creates a byproduct called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, that we’re not exactly built for.

But you can compensate for them with some natural solutions that will help you:

  • Keep your arteries supple and strong
  • Maintain endothelial function
  • Have healthy blood pressure
  • Give your body the strongest antioxidant protection possible
  • Prevent the buildup of bodily toxins
  • Lower inflammation and prevent diseases like diabetes and atherosclerosis

AGEs occur when a sugar attaches itself to a protein or fat. Sometimes this happens when you “brown” food – like when you caramelize vegetables on the stove, or get a “golden” or brown crust on baked goods.

It also happens when you cook meats for a long time, or it might happen when you brown your Christmas ham as you’re cooking it this weekend.

When you eat foods with AGEs, they can gather in any number of tissues. The basic result is that the tissue gets “stiffer.” When tissues get stiffer, they don’t work as they should.

This is especially true of your endothelium, the organ in your body that’s more than 93,000 miles long. The endothelium lines many tissues in your body including your veins, and is critical to proper blood flow.

AGEs block nitric oxide activity in the endothelium, keeping your blood vessels from relaxing and flowing freely. AGEs also cause the endothelium to produce a nasty free radical called reactive oxygen species that’s very damaging to healthy cells and tissue.

A recent study looked at the endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress before and after a meal containing AGEs. After the meal, the people who ate the high-AGE meal had their capillary blood flow reduced by 62%, while the ability of larger vessels to dilate decreased by 36%.1

AGEs have been associated with a number of diseases, especially diabetes and atherosclerosis.

But AGEs don’t only come from outside your body in the form of food or pollutants like cigarette smoke. You make AGEs inside your body, too.

After you eat, your body can still make advanced glycation end products from the simple sugars from carbs as well as sugary foods. And while a lot of sugar goes to run your metabolism, any sugar circulating in your blood has many chances to be turned into an AGE, especially if you eat a lot of carbs or sugar at once.

Fructose undergoes glycation at about 10 times the rate as glucose. Considering all the products that have swapped natural sugar for concentrated fructose, is it a surprise we’re seeing skyrocketing rates of diabetes and other chronic inflammatory diseases?

To prevent buildup of AGEs in your body, follow these four easy steps: (more…)

Beware of Molds

No Mold In Newfoundland!

Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from allergic reactions to molds yet most don’t realize the cause could be from fungi. Recently, as much wet weather as the country has had, mold has certainly made its way into people’s homes as well as the headlines. Many people still don’t fully understand the health hazards of fungal exposure. Sometimes, people are unaware that they are battling mold spores until they become very sick. Many times it is hard for the doctor to figure out exactly what is wrong. Once they leave the affected area or the mold is eliminated they most likely recover with few serious side effects.

There are a couple of dangerous molds to which exposure can result in suffering from a myriad of serious symptoms and illnesses. Several of these illnesses these include heart problems, cancer, MS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity and more. (more…)

LDL (Bad) Cholesterol May Not Be So Bad After All – What You Need to Know…

Story at-a-glance

  • High cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease. In one 13-year-long study, men with cholesterol of 330 had fewer hemorrhagic strokes than men with cholesterol less than 180.
  • Newer testing methods can more accurately evaluate your individual risk for heart disease. The cholesterol fractionation test should be used along with a subfractionated lipid panel. The first measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The second measures mean particle size, which is one of the most important factors in terms of determining heart disease risk.
  • Large, buoyant LDL particles that are not oxidized, and therefore not inflammatory, are not a concern in terms of heart disease risk. Small-particle LDL’s on the other hand, are inflammatory and contribute to harmful plaque buildup in your arteries. The best way to “treat” small-particle LDL’s is through dietary intervention. There is no drug treatment available that affects LDL particle size.
  • One in four Americans over the age of 45 are currently taking a statin drug. Unfortunately, few are aware of the absolute necessity to take CoQ10 along with it, to buffer against some of the most devastating side effects of the drug.
  • If you’re on a statin drug, you need to take 100-200 mg of CoQ10 or ubiquinol daily. You cannot get enough of it through your diet. (more…)

Marathon Myth 2,500 Years in the Making

Hey, Guys; This Is NOT The Marathon...Guys?!

For mainstream media the ultimate gauge of fitness is running a marathon. Media marketing says that if you can run a marathon you’re in great shape and super healthy.

But people have been dropping dead from excessive cardio for thousands of years.

The term Marathon comes from the Greek myth about a messenger who was sent from the Battle of Marathon to Athens…to announce that the Persians had been defeated. He ran 25 miles without stopping until he got to Athens.

He had enough breath left to shout “we have won” and promptly died.

In the modern world, people die every year from running marathons. You can read more about that in our story here.

But it’s not just marathons that are the problem. Long distance cardio is plenty risky.

Take Jorge Fernandez for example. He’s a former Air Force officer: as fit and conditioned as possible. But he dropped dead after running 13 miles in a half-marathon race in San Antonio. He wasn’t the only one…48 other runners from the same race wound up in hospital too.

Co-runner Sheryl Sculley did complete the half-marathon. And she was shocked by what happened to Fernandez.

“It was very unfortunate,” she says. “He was in great shape.” (more…)

How black licorice can help your digestion

You probably tried black licorice when you were a kid, and either loved it or hated it. Its sweet taste is distinct and has similar flavouring to fennel or anise. In fact, licorice candy often contains less licorice extract and more anise flavouring, but it’s the extract – the remnants of boiled licorice root – that has many health benefits. (more…)

Dear David,

Happy Thanksgiving from my family and staff to you and your family.

I hope you’re going to have a great meal today. And don’t let all those politically correct “health” experts ruin it for you. The Thanksgiving meal we eat in America is one of the healthiest you can have. It’s a treasure trove of benefits.

Let’s take a look at just a few of the foods we eat on Thanksgiving:

Turkey: Like any meal that’s good for you, Thanksgiving is centered on protein. In this case, from turkey. I have a big, free-range turkey delivered to my house every year.

Wild turkeys forage on green leaves, grass, grass seeds, clover, berries and insects (grasshoppers, beetles and ants). Some of their other favorites include blackberry, buttercups and violets.

This native diet makes them one of the most nutritious birds for you to eat. A free-range turkey that has nutrients like: (more…)
