Today, I will let you in on an unusual chain of events that led researchers to discover that after all, there is another mineral besides calcium that plays a crucial role in osteoporosis. And that nutrition matters. I call it an out-of-laboratory experience…
Here’s what happened. The winter of 2005 turned out to be unusually cold in Spain. And on that same year, scientists at the Research Institute of Hunting Resources (IREC) noticed that deers’ antlers were breaking at an alarming rate. Nobody could figure out the reason for this strange occurrence.
Fast forward to January of this year, when the study that solved the mystery was published in the Frontiers of Bioscience journal.1 Conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) and IREC, their findings and conclusion will most likely rattle the mainstream medical establishment. There’s no denying. We live in a stressful world, and this can unfortunately affect a lot more than just our mood. As I write in the Save Our Bones Program, stress actually hurts our bones because,
“Stress is an acidifying process because of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The secretion of cortisol has the same effect on the alkaline/acid balance as when you eat highly acidifying foods” (more…)

As I write in a recent blog post titled ‘Alert: New Life-Threatening Reclast Side Effects’, the most commonly reported Reclast side effects – ranging from joint and bone pain to osteonecrosis of the jaw – pale in comparison to the most recent concerns regarding kidney impairment and failure. It can be so romantic and relaxing…
The sound of falling rain, the calming lull of a waterfall, the invigorating effect of the ocean…
Being in close proximity to all of these is also electrifying (literally) and has profound bone health benefits.
As amazing as this sounds, it has been scientifically proven that when water moves, there is a release of negative ions – electrically charged particles that attach themselves to damaging free radicals. And most importantly, these ions alkalize your body.1 (more…)

Do you remember that old television show, “Who Do You Trust?” The show was entertaining and lighthearted, but it raises an important question. Exactly who can you trust, especially in this internet age, where we’re incessantly bombarded by a confusing amalgam of “expert” opinions? (more…)

We have a tremendously smart and educated Save Our Bones community that’s always interested in seeking out the latest research. As it turns out, some members wrote in about lactoferrin just as I was in the process of researching the latest findings to share with you. I love that kind of synchronicity!
So what is lactoferrin and why should you consider including it in your bone health regimen? (more…)

Remember the 80s? Mullets were the rage, Michael Jackson’s music video Thriller invaded the airwaves, and low fat diets were the biggest – and newest – nutritional craze.
Fast forward to today. While mullets are harder to come by, low fat foods still crowd supermarket shelves, new fad diets continue to spring up, and fats are generally considered unhealthy. Yet fats are necessary to absorb fat soluble vitamins such as CoQ10 and vitamins A, D, E, and K. And guess what, CoQ10, vitamin E, and K are bone-healthy Foundation Supplements. (more…)

If you are a strawberry addict like me, then June must make you very happy. Canadian strawberries are just the best. Unlike their oversized waterlogged cousins to the south, berries grown in Canada are teaming with flavour. The common garden strawberry that we find in stores today is actually a hybrid of the French (for flavour) and Argentinean (for size) varieties. In our modern world, we are accustomed to strawberries being available year round, but nothing can compare to the first sweet taste of a June strawberry that has been picked the day before. Local berries also equal a much smaller carbon footprint. (more…)

Cool, refreshing cantaloupes are a wonderful treat for a warm summer day. And you can eat your fill, knowing that with every delicious bite you’re helping your bones to several Foundation Supplements, including Vitamin C and polyphenols.
Since summer’s just around the corner, now is a perfect time to start enjoying this colorful fruit. Although most supermarkets sell cantaloupes year-round, out of season fruits have to be imported, so you’ll find the best and sweetest local cantaloupes in the summer. (more…)

Every year I look forward to making the pilgrimage to my sister’s home in the woods, where we pick the sprigs from her asparagus patch. Usually we sit on the sun porch and breakfast on the crispy, green stems straight from the ground, letting hunger be our seasoning. Eaten freshly harvested, asparagus tastes similar to snap peas and can be quite addictive. Asparagus is brimming with B-vitamins that energize and protect your heart and brain. It also boasts five grams of vegetarian protein, vitamin C, fiber and tissue-repairing manganese and iron. (more…)

The recent earthquake in Japan dealt a shock to the entire world. As the events of this tragedy continue to unfold, I’m immensely saddened by the scenes of loss and moved by the heroism of the nuclear plant workers who press on despite grave risks to their personal health. My heart and prayers are with the Japanese people at this time of unimaginable crisis.
If you’ve been following the news, you’ve probably heard about iodine tablets and potassium iodide as a means of mitigating the effects of radiation. Even as far away as the U.S., some are concerned about potential radiation and wondering if they should take iodine tablets, or at least stock up on them. (more…)

The human body is equipped with a remarkable alert system. When something is not quite right inside your body, it will manifest itself externally. It’s the body’s equivalent of a fire alarm.
This is especially true when it comes to the health of your fingernails. The appearance and quality of your nails are important indicators of your bone health. And when you know what to look for, they can give you clues to help you determine the state of your bone health. In fact, my own nails have improved tremendously when I tested the Save Our Bones Program on myself (yes, I was my own guinea pig). It was just one of the many fringe benefits of the program, besides getting rid of osteoporosis. (more…)

Drugs
by Vivian Goldschmidt, MA .

Strontium is an element abundantly found in mineral compounds which has many uses in the metal industry. It is also utilized in medical imaging equipment, pyrotechnics, optics, and pottery glazes. One of the most notorious strontium isotopes is strontium-90, a highly radioactive component of nuclear fallout. Discovered in 1808 in the Scottish town Strontian – hence its name – it is only recently that strontium has come into the limelight as a
bone health supplement and drug. (more…)
