Thanks to mass fluoridation of our municipal water supplies and inclusion of man-made fluoride in toothpastes and other dental and consumer products, most of us regularly consume dangerous amounts of unnatural fluoride compounds. Despite claims of dental health improvement, such fluoride actually leads to worse dental health as well as a host of other very serious health consequences. Though it may be next to impossible to avoid fluoride entirely, there are many steps one can take to avoid much of the fluoride we consume as well as eliminate existing fluoride in our bodies. New years resolutions can be challenging at times so why not simply start by adding more good things into your diet as opposed to taking things out. Add these 4 simple detox tips to your day and you’ll be sure to feel great in no time. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2012!

1. Drink More Water

Too often we misinterpret thirst for hunger. Our signal for thirst may cause us to eat as we mistake it for hunger pains. Reach for water first and make sure you are well hydrated before eating any meal throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Where possible make sure to drink your water at least 30 minutes before eating as this will allow time for the water to properly penetrate the cells of your body and hydrate your stomach lining in preparation for proper digestion. I like to add lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to my water or green it up with barley grass powder, wheatgrass powder, spirulina or chlorella. Yum! (more…)

It’s that time of year when even the most diligent healthy eater is thinking about dieting. Summer, the season of fewer clothes (shorts, tank tops, sundresses and bathing suits) and more skin, is just around the corner. As a nutrition editor and registered dietitian,  I hear about tons of quick fixes and fad diets. But the one I’ve been asked about a lot lately is detox diets. (more…)

How to detox toxins from your body: Four essential ingredients for the best cleanse

We use over 80,000 toxic chemicals every day and over 1000 new ones are being developed every year! What is even more astounding is the fact that many of these toxins are stored in our fat cells and cause hormonal havoc within us. If you are currently experiencing lethargy, difficulty concentrating, joint pains or stiffness, headaches, bad breath, strong body odor, acne, psoriasis, water retention, abdominal bloating, excess body fat, difficulty losing weight, PMS, indigestion, or constipation, a simple detox could be just the needed boost to turn your health around and shed those excess pounds. Vivian Goldschmidt, MA

You may already know that bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva, and others, are a very unattractive option if you want to have strong, flexible and healthy bones.

But what if you’ve already taken these drugs at some point or want to stop taking them? You might be concerned about what happens when you stop them “cold turkey”. Will the drug stay in my bones forever? Did I do permanent damage? Will I ever be able to build bones naturally? Will the Save Our Bones Program work for me? To date, I’ve received thousands of emails asking me just that. (more…)

Why Detox?

Our bodies naturally detoxify everyday as part of a normal body process. Detoxification is one of the body’s most basic automatic functions of eliminating and neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin. Unfortunately in this day and age, with the pollution found in the air, water and food we eat, our bodies have a hard time keeping up. Our chemicalized diet with too much animal protein, too much saturated and trans fats, too much caffeine and alcohol radically changes our internal ecosystem. (more…)

That Trout May Be Too Poisoned to Eat

(From naturalnews.com, 2010/5/8)

I love to fish. Even though, when I take my son Dylan fishing, he catches fish like crazy, and I never seem to catch a thing. But it doesn’t matter. Fishing puts us in a different world. As the Babylonian proverb says, “The gods do not deduct from man’s allotted span the hours spent fishing.”

So… How sad it was for me to discover that we can’t eat the fish caught in most streams anymore.

I’ve always believed it’s better to eat wild cod, wild salmon, and bass we catch in freshwater streams, because it’s far healthier than farm-raised fish. But there’s some disturbing news I need to share with you. Wild-caught fish is not the clear-cut choice it used to be.

When about 300 streams across the U.S. were tested, one hundred percent of the fish were found to be contaminated with mercury.1 It’s gotten that bad.

And, more than two thirds of the fish had more mercury than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says is safe.

The mercury is coming from industrial pollution. It rains down from the atmosphere and settles in our water, where it builds up in fish.
